Regions Offer the X-Factor - Katikati

24 May, 2019

Heading further north, in the last of our series of why the regions have the x-factor, this week we look at Katikati, based in the Bay of Plenty.

Known for:

  • Home to New Zealand’s largest outdoor art gallery.
  • Kiwifruit and Avocado Country.

Just 20 minutes from Tauranga is Katikati. Close to Waihi Beach, it’s attracting people from Auckland and Hamilton, looking to downsize as they enter their retirement years.

Ross Collins, Owner of Tall Poppy Katikati estimates around 80% of current buyers are moving into the Katikati region from other towns and cities in New Zealand.

“People want to be close to beautiful beaches, and the Tauranga Harbour. Katikati offers the perfect solution for people wanting to live in the Bay of Plenty, without paying the price tag that usually comes with coastal properties - especially when entering retirement,” says Ross Collins.

“Generally, homes in Katikati are $100,000 less than in Tauranga. This means they can enjoy everything the Bay of Plenty has to offer while leaving money in the bank."

Seasonal work in the fruit picking industry also caters for the town’s community.

“Lots of retirees work in local orchards or in packing houses for three to four months of the year to supplement their income and lifestyle, enabling them to travel or manage living costs. Our fishing is fantastic, we have five golf courses within 30 minutes, and 12 within an hour.

“Within 90 minutes, there is so much to do, all while living in a relaxing town with a great, connected community,” says Ross Collins.
