The branch may be new, but the expertise of owners Leona Munro and Andrew Berryman is not, with the pair bringing combined decades of experience in the real estate industry to the new business. This adds to a solid foundation of local knowledge, as both are born and bred locals who know the region and market like the back of their hand.
“That’s where real estate and community support really intersect,” she says.
“I try and introduce purchasers into the area and if they’ve got children, I introduce them to the school - it’s such a great place and if I can do something to help it, that would be great”.
Leona, whose hobbies include fitness and outdoor activities, also backs the local swimming pool and the Coastal Classic mountain biking/running event each year - support she will bring with her from her previous real estate company to Tall Poppy.
But why Tall Poppy? Leona says she made the move because she believes transparency is everything when it comes to real estate. The flat fee model and free, leading edge marketing are the icing on the cake.
“Everyone can see what they’re in for,” she says.
“Transparency is huge. I’ve watched Tall Poppy for the last couple of years and seen their presence grow and grow. It’s an amazing opportunity for me to get into something exciting, fresh, more personalised and more fair.”
Andrew agrees with his business partner. The pair used to work together in different sections of the same large real estate company. They had often talked about Tall Poppy, he says.
“They’re just doing things better,” he says.
“Tall Poppy is getting away from the massive corporate office structure and is putting the thought back into Real Estate - flipping it on its head actually”.
Andrew is also a Dunedin lad, with West Harbour his local patch, but an extensive knowledge of the wider area at his fingertips. He sponsors Harbour Rugby Club, and supports the local school among other things.
Out at the Harbour he is known as the local real estate agent, no matter what company he’s worked for. His reputation for experience and honest dealings meaning his phone often rings when a Harbour dweller wants to sell, or buy. Bringing that background to the new Tall Poppy business, coupled with flat fees, free marketing and innovation provided by the latter, means Andrew’s clients really will be getting some top level real estate service.
“Tall Poppy is exciting and new,” Andrew says.
“Getting away from having big corporate structures and the associated costs of that, means that with us, vendors are not paying huge fees for things they don’t even get to see. Tall Poppy’s marketing and social media is something else - it’s the way forward”.
